State's oldest Boy Scouts troop leads Oradell parade
ORADELL — New Jersey's oldest Boy Scout Troop — and home to a pioneering astronaut — was honored Monday, leading the town's annual Independence Day parade.
More than 50 Troop 36 members, old and new, led off the parade to cheering residents. "This is long overdue," said the troop's former Scoutmaster Charles Geer, who drove 13 hours from Charlotte, N.C., for the event.
Members of the troop — at 100 years old, one of the nation's oldest — were Grand Marshals of the parade which featured veterans, military police, the Oradell Public Library, the Oradell Environment Committee and bicyclists.
The Boy Scout troop was chartered on Feb. 11, 1911 after Charles Livingston Bull, a close friend of Boy Scout of America founder William Boyce, founded it, originally known as Troop 1.
In 1928, it became Troop 36 when American Legion Post 41 became its sponsor. The troop boosts many distinguished alums, including Wally Schirra. One of the country's original seven astronauts, he joined the troop in 1934 at age 12.
Schirra piloted the six-orbit Sigma 7 Mercury flight, which lasted 9 hours, 15 minutes. Later, he served as backup command pilot for the Gemini III Mission, according to www.nasa.gov. He died in May 2007.
"It's amazing how far people can go," David Mulcahy, a 12-year-old scout, said of the organization.
The Boy Scouts teaches duty and responsibility, but it's important to have fun, he said.
Geer believes troop members should emulate Schirra's path to success.
"It's not just being a leader, but a mentor," said Geer, the scoutmaster from 1998 to 2005. "You have to help guide [these boys] into manhood."
The parade represents how good the country is and how it has progressed throughout history, said former troop member Andrew Flores, 21.
"We've become one of the best countries in the world," he said.
Troop member Alex Eckert, 17, who also marched in the parade, said the organization has allowed him to backpack in New Mexico and Alaska. He also scuba dived in the Florida Keys.
Along the parade route, John Robertson, 53, said, "This is a great tradition and I enjoy watching the veterans receive praise for their dedication."
Elizabeth McDonough, 85, hasn't missed the parade in five decades.
"I only have to walk down to the corner," the 54-year-resident joked. "I meet neighbors I haven't seen all year."
The highlight for McDonough? It's hearing the Hawthorne Caballeros, all-age drum and bugle corps that concludes the parade.
