Photos: Pets available for adoption at SICSA

The Society for the Improvement of Conditions for Stray Animals, or SICSA, currently has nearly 250 animals available for adoption, housed both in its Kettering shelter and in foster homes.

The shelter, which currently has 40 dogs and 200 cats and kittens, adopts out about 100 pets per month, annually finding homes for more than 1,000 pets.

While the shelter’s primary goal is to find permanent homes for animals in need, the cost of doing so is expensive. SICSA spends about $20 per day per pet, with animal bills reaching roughly $150,000 each month. To help defray costs, the shelter regularly holds fundraisers.

Upcoming fundraisers are: a Dog Wash and Paw Painting event 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 23 at Archer’s Tavern in Centerville; and a Red Dog Charity Auction — a silent and live auction — Sept. 30 at the Presidential Banquet Center.

SICSA also is holding a 2012 Calendar Contest through July 31. For $10, pet owners can enter photos of their pets for consideration in the 2012 calendar or have their pet’s photo taken at Moto Photo — at Washington Square or in Kettering — and receive a 5-inch-by-7-inch photo to be entered in the contest.

The shelter recently had a cat sale, during which adult cats were offered for adopted for $40. The sale began May 20 to help encourage the adoption of adult cats, which often are overlooked during May and June when the shelter is filled with kittens.
