Paul Feig on the Record-Breaking Success of Bridesmaids and the Possibility of ...

If the total grosses of The Hangover Part II , Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Transformers: Dark of the Moon have you feeling a bit peaked, there is some hope: the success of Bridesmaids . The beloved Kristen Wiig-led comedy not only scored near-universal praise from critics upon its release in May, but record crowds as well; it’s the biggest Judd Apatow production ever , and over the Fourth of July, Bridesmaids became the highest grossing R-rated female comedy of all-time. Said director Paul Feig to Movieline about topping Sex and the City for that crown: “I’m dancing in the streets about that one.”

As he should be. The Bridesmaids director rang up Movieline from London on Friday afternoon where he’s busy writing what he called “ Dumb Jock ,” the romantic comedy that could star Jon Hamm and Melissa McCarthy . “I’m very excited about that project,” he said. “I’m writing with them in mind, and it’s just a love story that I’ve always wanted to write, that I think will be really funny, but will play much more real than most quote-unquote romantic comedies. Fingers crossed, I get them to do it.”

Feig took some time away from that highly anticipated project to discuss the success of Bridesmaids , how Hollywood will react to its record-breaking box office, and just what he’d be looking for from Bridesmaids 2 .

So, what are you doing to celebrate becoming the biggest Judd Apatow production ever at the box office? I’m still kinda buried at work right now, but I’m just really, really happy. It’s kinda what I secretly hoped would happen. The funny thing was, pretty much from the moment we wrapped and started editing, Judd would always — joking, but serious — refer to this as his most successful film. It was really exciting that it actually turned out to be that.

Were you expecting Bridesmaids to connect with audiences the way it has? I was feeling good about it, and, I think it was the moment we did the first real test screening of the two-hour-twenty-minute version in Woodland Hills — it was still pretty rough, and it just went through the roof.

Tremors Attack Pack (Tremors/ Tremors 2 - Aftershocks/ Tremors 3 ...

The story is simple: a B-movie-esque scenario where giant man-eating subterranean monsters (big wormlike things called aptly named Graboids) start plucking man and animal from the surface in a remote desert town. Bacon and Ward are trapped by the underground beasts with little known Finn Carter and mercenary neighbors (Michael Gross) and his wife (Reba McEntire). The result is a fun story of everyone saving themselves and finding a way to kill the monsters before the monsters eat them all. Tremors 2 is very entertaining. Another fun movie and an above par sequel. But gone is the realistic notion that the original movie carried with "these-people-are-trapped-and-have-no-choice-but-to-fight-the-monsters-themselves". Instead remnant cast members Ward and Gross (instead of the military or some superior entity) are commissioned to dispose of the reappearance of the Graboids. Kevin Bacon is a huge loss to the the comradery factor that the original held. The flick moves a long well, has a good story, it's still scary and suspenseful, and has a great surprise twist when the Graboids mutate making this somewhat of an original in its own right. Tremors 3 is the better of the two with another mutation twist, and an entertaining story. Michael Gross is back as Burt, but you really have to turn a blind eye to the why-hasn't-anyone-called-the-frickin'-army factor. Tremors 4 is a prequel to the original that is difficult to sit all the way through. There is really no need to elaborate on #3 or #4, because they are both so predictable based on the first two that you can easily guess what they are about and what happens. Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward star as two country handymen who lead a cast of zany characters to safety in this exciting sci-fi creature comedy. Just as Val McKee (Bacon) and Earl Basset (Ward) decide to leave Perfection, Nevada, strange rumblings prevent their departure. With the help of a shapely seismology student (Finn Carter), they discover their desolate town is infested with gigantic man-eating creatures that live below the ground. The race is on to overcome these slimy subterraneans and find a way to higher ground, in this enjoyable thriller co-starring Michael Gross and Reba McEntire. They’re back! The giant underground creatures that terrorized a desert town in Tremors are now plowing their way through Mexican oil fields, gobbling up everything and everyone around-and only one man can stop them!
