Ask 411 Games 07.04.11: Dreamcast Porting, Street Fighter Morphing, Celebrities Endorsing, More!Posted by Mathew Sforcina on 07.04.2011
Why did Street Fighter move to an anime visual style? What is the best-selling game endorsed by a celebrity? What happened to the Army of Darkness game? And what's going on with the next Dragon Slayer? All this and more covered this week in Ask 411 Games!
Why has Nihon Falcom gotten away from the Dragon Slayer series? I loved Legacy of the Wizard and Faxanadu back on the Nintendo (which were Dragon Slayer IV and a spin-off of Dragon Slayer II: Xanadu, respectively), with Faxanadu in particular doing quite well in the US (to the point that Nintendo actually included two episodes of Captain N spotlighting the game). They're still developing the Legend of Heroes games (which started as Dragon Slayer spin-offs) for the PSP. So why has Falcom seemingly abandoned the series? I can't be the only one hoping for at least the two English games to be released on the Virtual Console, or the only one who would appreciate a new game in the series, can I? The Dragon Slayer ‘series' of games is a series of somewhat unrelated action RPGs made for the various Japanese PCs during it's run, with each game having some similar gameplay mechanics but having no relationship to each other gameplay wise. Although designed for PCs, ports and reissues have popped up on the Game Boy, the Sega Saturn, and modern PC games. It's actually one of the pioneers in the genre, with it being in real time, and the game focused on combat rather than the more hardcore rougelike games that came before it. Dragon Slayer II: Xanadu is still claimed to be the highest selling PC game of all time in Japan, with over 400K copies sold. Plus it was also one of the very first game to have an expansion pack of sorts. And you are correct in the idea that they've been focusing on the Legend Of Heroes series, that's getting new games right now, but what of the original Dragon Slayer series? VC is easy to explain, a game like Faxanadu for instance was an English translation by Nintendo of a Hudson Soft game made under license from Nihon Falcom. And it seems to be the case that adding in more developers/publishers/companies exponentially decreases the odds of a game getting ported to VC. Although I should point out that Faxanadu actually IS available on VC, as is Ys Book I & II, so you got something.

They were great and unique racers which had a ton of games (or so it seemed at the time) in the SNES Megadrive era but i haven't heard about it in years. Now, at one point these tiny little cars were selling more than practically all the other major
For an engorged SNES controller stuffed with SNES guts, a 3.5-inch screen, a rechargeable battery and loaded up with an original F-Zero SNES cartridge, the Supaboy is surprisingly un-weighty.
I only played the NES one and I STUNK at it. I don't think I got further than than 4 or 5 levels in. Gauntlet Legends is one of my fave games ever though and I had a blast with that one. I picked up the Midway collection on the PSP and I believe

That friend is my SNES and the joys of Donkey Kong Country. I also picked up Mortal Kombat II at a thrift store and have been repeatedly frustrated by the extreme difficulty curve, especially when you make it to the last three fights.

Games like Super Mario World and Super Probotector on the SNES or Sonic 3 and Streets Of Rage 2 on the Mega Drive play absolutely perfectly with the pad, and look pixel perfect on the screen. Of course, it has to be said that you need to own the games

Some time ago I was contacted by a nice guy in the US. He asked me whether I would be interested in building a psp mod for his partner. She has limited use of one of her hands and as such can’t use a psp, but she can however use a SNES controller perfectly (I’ve seen it, its quite a talent). So he asked if I would be able to add a SNES controller to a PSP for her.
Well at long last here it is.
This is rather pointless no? I could see the usefulness if you were to say, enable an N64 or PS2 controller to be connected, but this is completely worthless. I mean, this isn’t even worth it for the sheer novelty. Even when you aren’t using a SNES controller, the back side of the system will forever have an uncomfortable USB port sticking out getting in the way of comfortable egronamics. It’s already been pointed out that PSP has a SNES-pad layout already, but I’d like to further add that this is an unsafe way to play your PSP. Having a removable controller tethered to your machine while it must be propped up for proper “SNES Mod” play will vastly increase the odds of the PSP falling and getting damaged. Wouldn’t it make a whole lot more sense to just play it how it WAS MEANT TO BE PLAYED in YOUR HANDS? I just hope no one is dumb enough to throw away big money on those auctions. I have a better alternative already and I didn’t have to pay or do anything extra to get it.
just to clear up some confusion, a good reason for a mod like this is people like stroke victims who have limited use. for example a stroke victim loses most of the use of their left hand so holding the direction pad down for periods of time is impossible. so to solve this they play with the controller upside down. so for the clueless morons posting this is usefull. the psp is heavier than a snes controller, so a person with limited use cant hold it really well. second who wants to have to play with their psp upside down?? so before opening your mouth and spitting out crap learn about the type of person a mod is designed for and why they cant use something because you can. and i too think the snes controller is sweet hence why i made many old school controllers for my xbox. keep it real.
