THE CITY INTERVIEW: Dyson seeking to engineer a better future
Sir James Dyson is one of the great British inventors, an heir of Isambard Kingdom Brunel and William Armstrong, the inventor of the hydraulic crane Tyneside.
Unlike some bankers who have reaped huge bonuses vilified at breakneck speed, success came slowly to Dyson.
His own original bagless vacuum cleaner, now stored in the cupboard under the stairs in millions of homes worldwide, has taken 15 years to launch and went through no fewer than 15 000 prototypes.
"It's a great pity banks have behaved like that and brought almost all economies. We must change our culture so that you create wealth do things and not simply trying to make money money.
"It was a card game, it was counterfeit money, it was unreal. The banks should not pay these outrageous salaries.
"It has permeated our culture in the most sinister, where people who are in the industry are considered as quasi-mental defective."
Warming to his theme, he said: "There is a cultural problem at large. Honest effort and things is the way to create wealth, as China discovered and the Germans never forgot.
"Germany did a lot of bad things, but manufacturing is something they do very well and we must be able to compete."
The words come rushing out of Dyson, a lovely silver-haired 64-year with those intense blue eyes that I surreptitiously ask her public relations man that wears tinted contact lenses.
Apparently, he did not, although the spin doctor conceded that indeed, they are incredibly cerulean.
Dyson, who now delights in the title of chief engineer at the firm that bears his name, has certainly made money from doing things.
His personal fortune is estimated to reach over 1 billion pounds and increased profits 9pc his company reported this week at a record £ 206m, will be added to the property.
Despite the delivery day to day control of the firm to chief executive Martin McCourt, Dyson and his family still own the company.
He lives in a mansion on an estate of 300 acres in Gloucestershire, and he and his wife have a house in France and a house in Chelsea.
But in the early days, he faces a struggle.

Following an apprenticeship soon: Ralf Meisenzahl and Joel Mokyr discuss the role of learning in the diffusion of innovation among skilled craftsmen during the British industrial revolution. "By using a sample of 759 mechanics and engineers, we study the incentives and institutions that facilitated the high rate of inventive activity during the industrial revolution. First, learning was the dominant form of skills training . Formal education has played a minor role.Second, many skilled workers relied on secrecy and first mover advantages to reap the benefits of their innovations. More than 40 percent of the sample here has never taken a patent. Third, skilled workers in Britain often published their work and engaged in debates about contemporary technological and social. In short, they were affected by the culture of the Enlightenment. "

Between 1780 and 1860, the population of Britain has tripled from 7.5 million to 23m and the real per capita income in real terms doubles in all classes.
The pilots increased machine productivity and the labor movement of the earth at the plant. The driver of the machine technology is not science as predicted by Bacon, but the improvement of existing technologies by ingenious craftsmen such as Newcomen, Watt, Stephenson and Trevithic. Surprisingly, scientists have trouble keeping up with the merchants!Hooke (the scientist) said Newcomen that his idea would not work while he was developing it (fortunately he persisted) and work on the thermodynamics of Carnot was invited by the steam engine of Watt, who could not not work according to the laws of science as they were understood by the greatest scientists at the time.
France followed the model of Bacon and dazzling set up science laboratories and institutions of learning, while the state ran on the basis of the taxes extorted by an army of tax farmers (farmers) who work on base a commission with draconian powers of search, detention and confiscation. Thus the Revolution, while the scientific laboratories produced scientific advances with no impact on the technology or the richness of the French nation.
