Donations go towards operating costs of the Siskiyou Ice Rink during winter months. Deadfall hike -- Mt. Shasta Trail Association hike to Deadfall Lakes and top of Mount Eddy. Ten mile roundtrip hike starts out gently on Pacific Crest Trail, then becomes challenging as hikers gain 2,250 feet to summit at 9,025. Meet at 9 a.m. in front of the Tree House in Mount Shasta. Expect to return by 6 p.m. Bring lunch, water and swim suit. Info: 926-0647. Run for the Fund -- Siskiyou Motorcycle Association’s 1st Run for the Fund benefit, poker run and BBQ. Additional $10 fee for passenger. Extra poker card: $5. Plus 50/50 drawing. A very rewarding hike today. I heard then found a Sooty Grouse way up in a tree, within a half mile of the woodcutter’s cabin site.

I also found the Williamson’s Sapsucker nest that Mr. Myers was looking for a week ago. As you descend down toward Marlette, Lake, not too much before the last bridge, there is a rather large felled tree alongside the trail. Walk just past that tree, look to your left, and you’ll see three pines growing from the same root. Two of the pines are topped off. In the middle pine is a hole–that’s the nest. The hole is small; I would never had seen it if the female hadn’t flown to it. She makes a lovely purring sound when she calls to the young. I also saw the male twice–feeding the nestlings and searching for food at the fish ladder. What a beautiful bird!

Just down from that nest, as you step onto the bridge, look to your right. There are two Aspens: one broken off and dead and another right next to it. In the live tree, almost all the way up on a somewhat bare branch, is a nest of what I believe was a Western Wood Pewee. I hope someone else sees it and can confirm it for me.

Seen on July 9: MacGillivray’s Warbler & two hummers (Rufous?) just past the first little bridge, about a mile up from where the bike and pedestrian trails split.

Hunt lake tail, n. Idaho. 2 mi. Round trip n only 635 ft elevation. Trail is 80% large boulders...awesome.
