Bird Flies On To Electric Line; Thousands Lose Power
Monday's incident was the latest in a series of recent freak accidents.
From a tree falling onto a line, to a squirrel getting into a circuit box, crews are working to prevent the incidents from happening again.
They're trimming trees near lines, and also adding barriers on poles to prevent animals from climbing them.
But Brian O'Dell, the Assistant General Manager of HEC, said hardly anything can prevent birds from flying onto lines.
He explained that Monday night's events only added to the recent bad luck.
"Up until recently, we've kind of been snake-bit. Just the timing has been such that they've all happened in a short period of time," O'Dell said. "Between some trees and squirrels, and now the buzzards, we've had as many outages in the past month as we would normally experience over the course of years."
HEC also experienced a phone outage on Monday, which meant customers got the busy signal when they called for answers regarding the outage.
O'Dell said it happened because a generator failed.
To prevent it from happening again, he said officials will maintain it better in the future.
