We talk to the Flynn bothers about their successful café
Veggie twins IF IT WERE POSSIBLE to bottle the enthusiasm, positivity, and happiness of Wicklow twins Steven and David Flynn, the boys would already have it on the shelves and everybody would be buying it. This dynamic duo posess a natural business acumen, a great attitude and have a hugely appealing manner with people. Outwardly easygoing these canny, 30year-old brothers knew what they wanted to achieve and how important it was to create happier, healthier and more sustainable communities that support the local economy.
Indeed, it's been an eye-opener to many how well this has worked and a pleasant surprise to the Flynn boys, just how successful their business has become in recent years.
The dream started eight years ago when the twins purchased a small greengrocery in their home village of Greystones and a year later opened the Happy Pear, a lively vegetarian café with a popular juice bar and a natural food shop that now employs 30 people including suppliers, with a turnover this year in excess of one million euro.
'We always knew even at a very young age that we would go into business together one day,' Steven tells us, ' but never imagined anything like this. Dave and I both have business degrees but we were more into sport and at one point wanted to be golf pros. We were also twin "meat heads" eating burgers and lots of junk food and just into the usual material things.'
Then at 22 the brothers decided to travel separately for a year, with Steven heading to Vancouver in Canada and Dave to Cape Town in South Africa. While living in different corners of the world, unknown to each other they had both become vegetarians and had developed a totally different attitude to life.
'We both developed a different mentality to everything around the same time and decided to live a lifestyle, focused more on health, family, friendship and happiness rather than money.
'We got really interested in healthy eating and travelled all over North, South and Central America checking out organic farms, vegetarian/vegan restaurants, health stores etc. looking for ideas and answers.
' Then seven years ago we opened the Happy Pear Café and Natural Food Shop. The timing was right as there was a lot of interest growing in Ireland, in whole foods and healthy eating. That interest is growing all the time with so many people suffering with illnesses and allergies and at last becoming aware that what they eat affects their heath. Our business is evolving and expanding all the time and has become more successful than we ever imagined.
