Blessing of American fellowship
The intent was simple.
"We decided it would be fun to get out into the community," Joyce Bradley said.
Bradley was among the organizers of a parade Monday that celebrated the nation's 235th birthday, while attempting to bring Grace United Methodist Church closer to the community behind the church at North 14th and Grape streets.
As part of the festivities, a handful of kids and a larger group of adults from the church paraded and then took part in a picnic — complete with hot dogs and all the fixings — at the church.
In the spirit of the holiday, prizes were given to the best-decorated bike, wagon and other kid's vehicle.
"We're just having a good time," Bradley said.
Officials with Grace United Methodist Church worked with the nonprofit Connecting Caring Communities when planning the parade.
Janet Mendenhall, community coordinator for that neighborhood for CCC, said her organization's goal is to develop neighborhoods like the one around Grace United Methodist Church into a place where neighbors become friends.
Mendenhall said she is working with church members to make the church more of a part of the neighborhood and that the parade is part of that effort.
Mendenhall will soon move into a "friendship house" in the neighborhood.
A Friendship House is described as a place where relationships are built with neighbors and it serves the children, youths, adults and families by providing year-round neighborhood support.
