To our beloved, our dearest Jo, till we meet again

Many readers and friends have, by now, learned of the demise of our beloved Jo. We thank all of you out there for your precious expressions of condolence and sympathy – along with fond memories shared by those whose lives she touched.

Josephine Martinez Ramos, second of five daughters of former President Fidel V. Ramos and First Lady Amelita “Ming” Ramos, passed away early morning June 27, 2011 (Monday) at The Medical City, a victim of lung cancer. She was truly God’s wonderful creation who lived always with good wishes for others and a song in her heart, as in her favorite Psalm.

Fondly known as “Jo,” she was a cultural director and musical artist who, as a teenager, trained under Prof. Carmencita Guanzon Arambulo (founder of Greenhills Music Studio). Jo was also a program coordinator/back-up singer with the Gary Valenciano group and a jack-of-all musical trades with the Mon Faustino Power Play Band.  She was a fashionable percussionist but powerful drummer for many ensembles. Her love of music, the arts, and sports, together with being “low-profile,” Jo always claimed, “was inherited from mother.”

A product of the International School of Manila as scholar, Jo also attended the UP College of Fine Arts and became a fashion designer and interior decorator. As part of an athletic family, Jo was a champion water-skier and member of the Philippine National Ladies Water-Skiing Team that won medals in SEA Games competition in the late 1970s.

Jo was born on January 18, 1957, at the Mary Johnston Hospital in Tondo. As a single parent, Jo was survived by her 17-year-old son Sergio, a high school senior studying music, drama, and other performing arts.

A “dearly beloved” card received from Mark and Aileen Javier whose parents, Col. Francisco and Mrs. Javier, PMA ’43, were long-time neighbors at Fort Bonifacio, eloquently expressed our faith that Jo had gone on to a better world. Memories abound of Jo as a beloved mom, a talented Filipino, and a Godly daughter.  Among her circle of musical colleagues, sportspeople, churchworkers, schoolmates, relatives, and others, she had been a true friend all the way.
