“Painters and Photographers in the Midwest” by Ammar Al-Hawi ...

One of the most characteristic features of the Midwest lies mainly in its beautiful and natural landscape which has been attracting the attention of several artists, mostly painters and photographs. So charmingly and fascinatingly have they been engraving the beauty of nature and the movement of life in the Midwest with their mighty brush of colors and their sharp eyes of observation into living and memorable pieces of art. Among such a brilliant cluster of Midwestern painters and photographers are Emil Armin, Doland Boe, Charles Burchfield, Frank V. Dudley, J. Jeffery Grant, Vaino Hannel, Luis Jimenez, David Sander, Joel Sheesley, Junius R. Sloan, Grant Wood, Morton Wendt Tucker, and above all Aimee Tomasek. All these names have enriched the Midwestern history with the uniqueness of their art of painting and the vividness of their skill of photography.

Emil Armin (1883-1971) – Romanian-American Chicago modernist and a graduate from Chicago Art Institute – is most famous for her oil painting, printmaking and wood sculpturing. She liked to spend much of her time painting and carving in New Mexico and the Indiana Dunes. She fell in love with nature as she came to experience it so remarkably in the Indiana Dunes. The Gateway (Chicago) 1943 represent a few of her excellent artworks that account for her ability to mix the country and the city elements so remarkably in her impressionistic oil paintings. If interested in having a look into these paintings and others, you can visit the following website: http://www.artnet.com/artist/1637/emil-armin.html .

Donald Boe belongs to the American artists of the first half of the twentieth century. Like Armin, his oil paintings show his influence by the school of Impressionism in his fantastic portrait of the tension between rural and city life. His skillful use of light and color, which strikes our eyes as soon as we take a glimpse of his Late Afternoon on the Farm (oil on canvas), leaves us behind with an unforgettable and indescribable impression; you immediately feel like you are living in and becoming a part of the image itself.

Charles Burchfield (1893-1967) was a keen observer of nature and a distinguished wonderer among woods in the Ohioan landscape.
