Patriotism in film can be done subtly

Red, white and blue patriotism is on full display on the Fourth of July.

Sometimes the best way to get a point across is in a roundabout way. That's what's so good about the following films — they don't tackle patriotism head-on. They're sneakily patriotic.

This is not to say that there aren't some really good films that are overt in their patriotism — "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington," "Sergeant York," that kind of thing. They're stirring in their own right. But there's something satisfying about embedding your message and leaving it there for audiences to discover. One way or another, these movies do that.

• "The Right Stuff" (1983): Philip Kaufman's epic staging of Tom Wolfe's great book, about the original Mercury 7 astronauts, is a gripping look at the first Americans in space (and, in particular, an American who never got there: Chuck Yeager (played by Sam Shepard). But while watching the rich detail of the lives on display — the cast, which includes Fred Ward, Ed Harris and Scott Glenn, is uniformly outstanding — it's easy to forget what started the push to reach space: a race with the Russians, which we see at the beginning of the film. We got to the moon first. So we win, right?

• "Apollo 13" (1995): And then, once you get to space, sometimes things go wrong. And you fix them. That's what happens in Ron Howard's exciting film, based on Jim Lovell's book "Lost Moon." If you don't cheer by the end, you probably won't be watching fireworks over the Fourth, either.

• "Rocky" (1976): The sequels were more explicitly patriotic, and any talk of the "Rocky" franchise is bound to include thoughts of those later films. Too bad, because this one is really, really good (and a best-picture winner at the Oscars, to boot). Its tale of the small-time tomato can (Sylvester Stallone, who wrote the script and starred) who holds his own against the great Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) is a picture-perfect example of the underdog standing up to the bully. Stallone probably wasn't thinking of anything like the colonies not backing down from the British, but hey, the film was released during the bicentennial.
