Calling Scots poets: annual contest launched

Liz Lochhead, Scotland’s new Makar or national poet, leads the team of judges for our annual Scots poetry competition.

The McCash Prize, run jointly by The Herald and Glasgow University, offers contestants not only the chance to display their creative talents but to share generous prize money of £1500.

Ms Lochhead says of the competition: “It’s great there’s a prize particularising writing in Scots and celebrating the huge variety of Scots that comes under this umbrella.  The ability to write cogent verse is obviously hard-wired into the Scottish psyche."

Previous winners have ranged from academics to housewives, school children to professional writers, a North Sea Oil worker to a psychiatric nurse. James McCash - who funded the prize after winning a poetry competition in The Herald - was himself a Gilmorehill-trained engineer.

Since it became a joint venture between the newspaper and university in 2003, the competition has attracted hundreds of entries not just from Scotland (and England too) but from all round the world, wherever Scots, or people of Scottish sympathies, are to be found. With HeraldScotland’s global reach, we hope this trend continues.

These are stirring times for the Scots tongue. At the opening of the new Scottish Parliament, the Education Minister, Mike Russell, took his oath partly in broad Scots and there is a growing commitment to make certain that Scotland’s languages and literature, as well as culture and history, have a secure place in Scottish schools. As it is, the continued resilience of spoken Scots in an age of mass media and pressures for cultural conformity is both remarkable and cheering.

We Scots are fortunate in having this extra resource of vocabulary and idiom as part of our heritage. Think of meaty adjectives such as dumfoonert, wabbit, and peeliewally; colourful nouns such as bogles and bauchles (not to mention bahookies!); legal terms such as demit and outwith; and expressions such as “going the messages” or “awa an’ bile yer can.” These, and countless more of the same, add a distinctive flavour to Scottish discourse.

Of course in 21st-century Scotland, as in Robert Burns’s time, people use both English and Scots. Burns moved seamlessly between the two, often within the same poem; and in our competition we are looking for a strong emphasis on the Scots language, rather than a sterile purity of use.
