Celebrating independence

FARMINGTON — On the nation's 235th birthday, local residents celebrated with family, friends and events marking Independence Day.

At Brookside Park, residents showered under the spray of a Farmington Fire Department engine while vendors sold holiday treats such as shaved ice, fry bread and roasted corn.

For Reggie Sanderson, the Fourth of July was an opportunity to spend time with his children. Sanderson's children live in Farmington, while he works in Clovis.

"I've been away from my kids for a month," he said. "When they're small, you've got to cherish it."

He also used the day to reflect on American freedoms while people in Syria and Lebanon continue to fight for basic liberties.

"It's great to live in a country like this where you can say what you want, do what you want, have your freedom of choice, your freedom of religion — it's a great country," he said.

Terri Paquin watched the fireworks Sunday night, then enjoyed Monday afternoon in the park's shade with her two sisters, niece and nephew.

"We come here every year," she said, adding that the family planned to enjoy the Freedom Days Electric Light Parade later.

Her niece, Desirre Sanchez, age 9, said she enjoys the Fourth. "I like the fireworks."

Engine 5 sprayed water on holiday celebrants as temperatures reached 97 by mid-afternoon. The engine loosed 500 gallons of water on a sprinkler setting to cool attendees at the park celebration.

"We call it a wet-down," said Capt. Doug Walker of the Farmington Fire Department. "Everybody seems to like it."

Grace Stock of Farmington sold crocheted red, white and blue hats from a booth at Brookside Park. She said business slowed as temperatures climbed, but she was nevertheless enjoying the holiday.

"I love the Fourth," she said. "I do. I'm one of those old-fashioned patriots. My heart kind of leaps a little bit when I see our flag flying."

Local municipalities and government agencies banned fireworks on the Fourth, citing extremely dry conditions that could lead to fires.

At Star Fireworks, 5510 Highway 64, Julia Cruz said business was "not too good," blaming the fireworks bans.

"It's unnecessary," Cruz said. "It's more hazardous with the sparklers and the fountains than it is with the artillery."

Fireworks users should be trusted to employ their common sense, she said.

Bloomfield marked the Fourth with the public unveiling of a granite monument at Bloomfield Municipal Complex displaying the Ten Commandments.

If she does the same for you, you’re definitely onto something. Show up to support her in ways you never imagined you could. Extend yourself emotionally in ways you never knew you could, and that exceed your comfort level. Feel your feelings and express them in a way that’s not angry or victimized. Most of all, love her through better or worse because life isn’t perfect and neither is either one of you.
