Animal Humane | New Mexico helping evacuees with pets
Update: The Santa Fe Animal Shelter and Humane Society is now full and can no longer accept pets that need shelter. This includes displaced pets or pets with owners that need temporary shelter.
Animal Humane | New Mexico in Albuquerque has now stopped accepting normal pet intakes, which means strays or owner surrenders, so that they have room to accept pets from those who need temporary shelter for their dogs, according to Marketing Director Lindsay Lancaster . Lancaster said AH | NM is also not accepting cats because they are at full capacity for felines.
Original story:
Animal Humane | New Mexico has taken adoptable pets from Santa Fe’s shelter to make room for pets that are being displaced by the Las Conchas fire in the Los Alamos area.
So far, the Albuquerque shelter has taken in 12 dogs from the Santa Fe Animal Shelter and Humane Society.
“We’re serving as overflow … taking adoptable pets from Santa Fe’s shelter so that they have space to provide temporary shelter for evacuated pets,” AH | NM Marketing Director Lindsay Lancaster said.
Pet owners should try to place their pets as close to where they’re staying as possible, Lancaster said. She hopes people in the Albuquerque and Santa Fe areas who have been considering adopting a pet will do so in order to make more room for pet evacuees.
“We hope [the] Santa Fe [shelter] would be able to clear out all of their adoptable pets and just operate as an emergency temporary shelter,” Lancaster said.
Residents that have been evacuated and need a safe place for a dog, cat or rabbit to stay can contact the Santa Fe Humane Society at (505) 983-4309 or go online .

Awe if I was still living there I'd try to help out... maybe pull her and foster her. Let me contact my cousin. She lives in Rio Rancho... she mayyyy... and I stress may be able to foster her at the very least. I'm trying to remember all the different rescues out there that may be able to pull her... one option is watermelon ranch, but last I checked they were mainly only accepting smaller breeds?
