Trash troubles area nonprofits
PONDERAY — Prospective donators to Bonner County’s nonprofit secondhand stores may want to take care before giving away items — they could do more harm than good.
Representatives from local second-hand stores that support charitable organizations said that people have been making a habit of leaving a pile of items, many of which are too damaged to use or sell, on the doorstep during the evening.
Panhandle Animal Shelter thrift store manager Marie Friedmann said broken electronics and other unsellable items aren’t the only thing they discover — sometimes people even discard empty boxes and bags of trash on their doorstep.
“We’re always getting something every day, whether it’s a small amount or a large amount,” Friedmann said. “(Friday) was a particularly bad day.”
Some of those after-hours donations seem to be well-intentioned cases of owners not realizing the extent of damage. A coffee table, for example, had once been a fine piece of furniture before a dog or some other animal sank its teeth into it. On other occasions, people have dropped off furniture at the door that would have been usable if the weather didn’t turn nasty during the night.
“That’s the real kicker — when people leave items that could have been good out in the rain,” Friedmann said.
Friedmann and PAS executive director Mandy Evans said that other individuals, however, are apparently trying to exploit the shelter to get rid of their junk. Broken electronics like TVs and DVD players are common, and sometimes people simply discard their trash bags on the site.
“I think some people think we have some sort of deal worked out with our garbage, but we don’t,” Evans said. “We pay just like everyone else.”
In fact, the shelter pays $500 a month for its garbage service that includes pick-ups once a week on Tuesday. However, Friedmann said that the dumpster is always full by Friday, forcing shelter officials to choose between ordering a special pick-up for about $130 or getting by without a trash receptacle for a few days.
By contrast, Community Assistance League member Cindy Chenault said that the nonprofit’s secondhand store Bizarre Bazaar occasionally receives donations that are clearly unusable, but indicated that the situation isn’t quite as debilitating. Nevertheless, the disposal costs can add up to an unwanted burden.
Jan Christians of 2nds, Anyone?, on the other hand, said that junk donations are rarely an issue. She theorized that as a lower-profile store, it might fly under people’s radar.

The myth shares thematic similarities with that of Phaëton — both are usually taken as tragic examples of hubris or failed ambition — and is often depicted in art. The Florida Panthers and their managing parties are the new age version of Icarus;
I changed for two reasons: 1) it got to a point where the mess was causing problems (as in, my friends didn't want to sit on a pile of garbage), and 2) I realized that you don't actually have to like cars or driving them to render a little organization

Tl;dr: Canonical tried to Apple-ize the Ubuntu GUI. It was gay. You can set it back by choosing “Ubuntu Classic” when you log in. Downgrading is nigh impossible, but this works fine.
Dear Ubuntu,
What were you thinking? If I wanted a candy-flavored launch bar with big fat retard buttons, I would breathe through my mouth, call myself “a creative person,” and buy Apple.
I did not buy a monitor whose ginormity rivals my testicles to look at absurdly pixelated yet mysterious icons, and slide my mouse along them trying to remember what these fucking hieroglyphs mean. Believe it or not, visual communication has seen significant advances since the pyramids were constructed.
Not only that, you turned my fantastically useful top menu bar into a wasted bar of white as blank as a moron’s gaze.
And finally, you helpfully moved every single program menu as far away from the actual window’s location as possible.
Slow. Clap.
I spent hours fiddling with restoring my tray notifications, some of them (like my Astrill VPN) showing no signs they would ever work. I undid some of the more egregious idiocies with scripts gleaned from the interweb.
And finally I discovered that I could TURN THE WHOLE FUCKING THING OFF at the login screen.
Mightn’t you have featured that info a little more prominently?
I suggest the following notice automatically appear post-upgrade:
