St. Francis Hospital's Uninsured Patient Care Under Microscope

INDIANAPOLIS -- A consumer advocacy group wants the Indiana Attorney General to investigate St. Francis Hospital's handling of its uninsured patients.

St. Francis Health reported spending $62 million in 2010 on people unable to pay for medical services in Beech Grove, Indianapolis and Mooresville, 6News' Rafael Sanchez reported.

An independent report found that the hospital is in violation of state law by not prominently disclosing its financial assistance programs to its potential patients.

Lindsay Helmbock, director of the Hospital Accountability Project, wants the attorney general to stand up for less fortunate patients.

"We believe that the attorney general's role is to protect consumers, and in this situation, consumers are not being protected," Helmbock said.

In a statement , St. Francis said it made information about its programs available on its bills and on its website.

The Hospital Accountability Project also focused on the city's three other major hospitals -- Community Health, St.Vincent and IU Health.

IU Health was rated very high in terms of making sure patients knew their options if they couldn't pay.

The hospital system said it provided $100 million in charity care to 60,000 people annually at its 17 facilities statewide.

The Internal Revenue Service will soon expect hospitals to disclose more about their finances from billing, debt collection and how much they spend on charity care.

Until then, health advocates are pushing state regulators to enforce existing rules imposed on hospitals.

"They need to do a better job of making that aware to the public," Helmbock said.

Representatives with the Attorney General's office confirmed they received a letter, which is under review. The following are comments from our users.
