Maximum youth sentence sought for teen who killed man
A teenager who killed a man on a river valley stairway will have to wait until next month to be sentenced.
The teen, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, pleaded guilty earlier this year to second-degree murder. He was 15 at the time of the attack.
The 25-year-old victim was found early on May 17, 2010 on the stairs near the Hotel MacDonald in downtown Edmonton. The man, who had last been seen alive at an inner-city shelter, died of a single stab wound.
CBC News decided not to name him last year in order to report the details of his troubled past.
According to the agreed statement of facts, the accused carried a machete and a knife to the stairway, after earlier indicating on his Facebook page that he wanted to "spill some guts."
He found the victim asleep on the staircase and stabbed him.
Crown prosecutor Dave Hill told the judge that he agrees with defence lawyer Pat Yuzwenko that the boy should serve seven years — the maximum sentence allowed under the Youth Criminal Justice Act — with four in custody and three in intensive rehabilitation.
Yuzwenko told the court that the boy was brutally abused as a young child and his mother died violently.
The boy wants to change and he wants to get into programming for those at a highest risk to reoffend, she said.
Sentencing is scheduled to take place on July 11.

Sweet Edmonton Wedding at the Fairmont Hotel MacDonald | Style Me ...
By having it in such beautiful but modern locations, I think we succeeded.
We personalized our wedding by choosing locations that showed off the River Valley. For most of our time together in Edmonton we lived near the River Valley and spent a lot of time running or taking walks in it. We also brought a little bit of Hawaii into the with our guestbook, a book of Hawaiian photos, and with our guest favors, pineapple shaped shortbread cookies with hawaiian flowers for the girls and surfboard trinkets for the boys.
My best advice to brides is don’t sweat the small stuff – you won’t notice it the day of! We loved Anthony and Rina of Infused Studios ; they made us feel so comfortable and captured everything so beautifully. When we look back at the photos we are right back in the moment and we love that one day we can show our kids and grand-kids our special day.
