Samsung Gravity Smart SGH-T589 (T-Mobile)
Samsung has expanded its budget Gravity line to include an Android phone for the first time. Fortunately, the experiment was successful. The Gravity Smart is a good performer for a budget Android device, with a reasonable balance of size, features, speed, and price. Just keep an eye on prices for higher-end phones at the time of purchase. If T-Mobile happens to be running a sale, you'll be better off with a more powerful cell phone , even if it's a few months older.
Design, Call Quality, and Hardware
The Gravity Smart measures 4.5 by 2.3 by 0.6 inches (HWD) and weighs 4.8 ounces. My test model was made of a matte, maroon-colored plastic that exhibits a metal-like sheen in certain lighting. You can also get one in grey or sapphire blue. Either way, the tapered, fingerprint-resistant design is comfortable to hold and use. The 3.2-inch, glass capacitive touch screen has 320-by-480-pixel resolution, which is typical for lower-end Android phones. I found it suitably responsive. The slide-out, four-row QWERTY keyboard features oval-shaped, relatively flat, rubbery keys. The staggered alignment feels a bit off kilter, but I didn't have much of a problem typing on it. You also get a built-in Swype on-screen keyboard for those times when you don't feel like sliding out the real thing.
The Gravity Smart is a quad-band EDGE (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) and dual-band HSDPA (1700/2100 MHz) device with 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi. It also supports T-Mobile's Wi-Fi calling when there isn't enough cellular signal, although the carrier's Android solution still isn't as good as Wi-Fi calling on its BlackBerry phones.
Regardless, the Gravity Smart isn't a good voice phone. Callers generally sounded poor; I heard a muffled tone in the earpiece, plus considerable static around some of the spoken syllables. The phone reported solid T-Mobile EDGE signal, but the display was overly optimistic, as the Gravity Smart dropped several calls during testing. Callers said I sounded okay but not great through the microphone. Calls sounded fine through an Aliph Jawbone Icon Bluetooth headset ($99, 4 stars), and voice dialing worked well over Bluetooth. The speakerphone sounded good and had a decent amount of gain. Battery life was excellent at 11 hours and 37 minutes of talk time in EDGE mode.
Under the hood, there's an 600MHz Qualcomm MSM7227 processor, just like in most budget Android devices. The Gravity Smart ships with Android 2.2 (Froyo); there's no official word on an Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) upgrade. There are five home screens you can customize and swipe between. This isn't Samsung's TouchWiz; the OS is barely distinguishable from stock Android, aside from Samsung's trademark black background in its various menus and apps. Response times were mixed. Menu panes and Web pages looked choppy when swiping between them, but other times, the Gravity Smart felt responsive.
