ALEXANDER'S EMPIRE:
Formulation to Decay
This volume is a sequel to
Crossroad of History: The Age of Alexander
Students often ask ancient historians whether there is
anything new in ancient history. The papers in Alexander’s Empire: Formulation to Decay indicate that the answer
is “yes,” even with regard to the most studied topics, if historians ask new
questions of old sources or apply new sources to old questions. Sometimes the result is finding new insight into the royal
ideology of Philip II, or establishing a more precise chronology for the
struggle for power that broke out in the wake of Alexander’s death. Sometimes seemingly secure facts are called
into question such as the nature of Alexander’s relationship to
Hephaestion. Whatever the result, as
these excellent papers abundantly demonstrate, the key to progress in
historical understanding is close attention to the sources.
