The Coming of the Greeks
Neither the
subject nor author of this volume requires lengthy introduction. Even Greeks of
the Classical Age worried about "the coming of the Greeks" and, to
the present day, an explanation satisfactory to all remains elusive. James
Hooker tackled the major issues associated with the question in these three
essays. His analysis of these issues is so sensible and cogent that gathering
the three discussions in a single volume will benefit many students of history,
classics, historical linguistics, and archaeology.
The insight stems from
James’ breadth of interest: a member of the Department of Greek at University College,
London for much
of his professional career, his work ranged from Linear B to Classical Greek
and included matters archaeological and historical as well as philological. His
firm grasp of language and archaeology suited James Hooker to deal with the
problems surrounding the arrival of Greek speakers in Greece inasmuch
as the evidence of both physical remains and linguistic development form the
core of the subject.
