13 THE CHANGING ASIA-PACIFIC REGION:
Strategic and Economic Issues.
Few if any regions of the world are undergoing the
rapidity of change—economic, political, and social—that is taking place in
Asia-Pacific. Thurs, for the states of this region, domestic and international
issues are closely intertwined and security assumes very broad dimensions,
ranging from neighborhood concerns about one’s self and family to issues
pertaining to the stability of the nation-state and its relations with others.
Further, issues of so-called ‘human security’ encompass those vital
environmental concerns that will be increasingly critical to the well-being of
