#12 KOREA:
Dynamics of Diplomacy and Unification.
Half a century after they fought a
costly civil war, the top leaders of the two Korean states got together for the
first time in the history of their divided nation. The inter-Korean summit of
June 2000 was a truly historic event. Not only did Kim Dae Jung, the president
of the Republic of Korea (ROK) and Kim Jong Il, the chairman of the National
Defense Commission of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), conduct
intense bilateral negotiations but they also reached an agreement that heralded
a dawn of a new era on the Korean Peninsula.
